Day 11&12 - ROME

It has been so busy that we are falling behind in updating our blog.
We have had so much fun in Rome the last two days and were able to actually fit in most of the highlights from this beautiful city.
Thursday we visited the Coliseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, and had an amazing dinner with our family, Valentina, Daniele, Margherita, Luciano and Anna. We decided to have a later night that night and visited the markets and restaurants in Trastevere along the Tiber river. The nightlife there was very interesting to see, but not quite the same speed as what our family is used to. We did get the kids some gelato, so that made their night.
Friday we spent the day around the Vatican. We got up early to make sure to get into the Cupola (the big dome) before the lines up started. The view of Rome from up there is well worth the early morning wake up and the 300+ stairs we climbed. We spent some time in St. Peter's Basilica and got some shopping done at the gift stores there too.  We moved from there to the museums which ended in the Sistine Chapel. This was a highlight for us and the kids actually got more out of it than we thought they would. They were very interested in the stories about why the male statues were naked but with some pretty important pieces of their anatomy missing. If you don't know the story...our kids can now tell you why.
After the Vatican, we walked to Castel St. Angelo where Benvenuto Cellini was imprisoned, and on to the Spanish Steps where we again walked up and down so many stairs. Mike and I are both really happy that we had been working out so much so that we could make it through all of that walking.
Just these two days would have made this trip so worthwhile, but we are really just getting started. Our next stop is visiting with family in Chieti. From what I hear, lots of great food, kisses, and family stories await!

Alie:
Day 11 was long. We got to sleep in which was nice but as soon as we left we started walking, A LOT!! We started off at the Colosseum which was super cool and we got to go inside the arena where the fights would take place. I took a lot of handstand photos all over the place where I thought it would look cool. Next, we got lunch at a tiny grocery store and went out of the forum which took forever but was still super nice. Afterwards, we went back to the apartment and relaxed for a bit before going out to dinner with dads cousin's family and went walking along the market's. Later when we got home we went straight to bed since it was midnight. The next day we had to get up way too early so that we could catch our bus to the Vatican and be there by nine. We did a walk around the top of the dome and then went into the Basilica. At 12:30 we went to the Vatican museum which was super busy and we were so sore already. I loved the cool statues and paintings all over the museum. We walked around that for what felt forever and then went into the beautiful Sistine Chapel which was super, super crowded. Later we went for lunch at McDonald's which was sooooo good and then we walked to the Castello St. Angelo and the Spanish steps while looking at $9000 dresses. Later that night we relaxed at home and went to sleep. It was super fun but tiring and long two day's.

Gabe:
Today I woke up by my mom then I got sent to eat breakfast. For breakfast, I had a banana and a biscuit. After breakfast, we all went to the train stop. Once we got on the train we were off to the Coliseum. Once we got to the Colosseum we all were so excited to go in the Colosseum. Once we all saw the Colosseum we all went to go get some lunch. After eating lunch we all went to a boring place where all you did was walk. Then we went to dinner with the family. After that, we all went back to the apartment where we washed our feet then went to bed. The next morning I had breakfast and went straight to the Vatican. First, we all claimed 4 hundred stares to the top where you could see all of Rome. Then we all went to the museum where I saw a real mummy then we went to the Spanish steps where there were more stairs. Then we went back home and went to bed.

Julian:
Today we got up really early to catch a train to the Colosseum. Once we got there we used our fast passes to skip the really really really really long line. Once we got in we saw that the whole inside was a museum!!! At one exhibit we saw the name of one of our great ancestors. Once we got into the middle we saw that it was under construction so that they could restore it to its original form. Once we were done it we took a quick walk to the Roman Forum. It is the place were the Emperor's lived but now it is all crumbled. That night we went to a restaurant with Valentina. After we ate we went to the night market. We bought only some gelatos. The next day we got in a huge train and went to the Vatican. First, we walked up to the Cupola then we went to the gift shop. Then we spent the next two hours walking to the Sistine Chapel. After all of that, we hiked up and down the Spanish steps. I finally finished buying all the gifts for my best friends. Today and yesterday were great!
